Cookie policy

The tools on this site work without a single cookie of our own. The ones that exist come from advertising, and you decide.

What a cookie is, in one line

A small file a site stores in your browser so it can recognise you on your next visit. The same legal umbrella covers similar technologies such as local storage.

VaultPass's own cookies

None. The tools — strength checker, generator, passphrases, sanitiser, utilities and the breach checker — all work without cookies.

The only thing stored in your browser is a language preference in local storage. It is not a cookie, it is never sent with any request and it does not identify you. It exists so you are not asked for your language on every visit.

Third-party cookies: advertising

This site is funded by Google AdSense advertising. Google and its vendors may use cookies to:

  • Serve the ads and avoid showing you the same one repeatedly.
  • Measure performance: how often an ad was seen and whether it was clicked.
  • Detect fraud and automated clicks.
  • Personalise the ads to your interests, if you consent.

The first three uses are considered necessary for advertising to function at all. The fourth — personalisation — requires your explicit permission, and you can refuse it without losing access to anything on this site.

How permission is requested

If you connect from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, on arrival you will see a notice managed by Funding Choices, Google's certified consent platform. There you can accept everything, decline personalisation, or review vendors one by one.

That notice appears before any personalisation cookie is set. Declining blocks no tool: you will still see ads, just not personalised ones.

How to change your mind later

  1. Clear this site's data from your browser. On your next visit the consent notice reappears and you can choose again.
  2. Manage it from your Google account, in ad settings, if you browse while signed in.
  3. Block third-party cookies in your browser settings. This is the bluntest option and affects every site, not just this one.

If you use an ad blocker

That is fine and you will not be asked to switch it off. The tools will keep working exactly the same. It is worth knowing, though, that advertising is what pays for the hosting and for the time spent writing the guides.
